Italy: the maximum quantities that will pass, are 500 mg of cannabis or 750 mg of cocaine,

is another gift to the Mafia and to organised crime
It’s official: the maximum quantities that will pass as ‘for personal use’ under the new Lex Fini are 500 milligrammes of cannabis — read: half a gramme (one mg = 1/1,000 g) or 0.0176 of an ounce, 750 mg of cocaine, 250 mg of heroin, 750 mg of MDMA (ecstasy), 500 mg of amphetamine, and 150 microgrammes of LSD — read: 0.00015, fifteen one-hundred-thousandths of a gramme (one µg = 1/1,000,000 g), in effect a trace amount. Quantities above these will be considered evidence of trafficking/pushing.

- The Berlusconi government wants to slam kids in gaol for having fifteen joints on them — cause for great alarm that Radicali Italiani Secretary Daniele Capezzone is trying to bring home to parents: ‘You may be unhappy about your son or daughter turning on, but it’s certainly worse for you to think that he/she is facing up to six years in a hard prison.’
- Marco Cappato says clearly and often what all thinking citizens know: ‘The new law is yet another gift to the Mafia and to organised crime generally’. As a parliamentary candidate of the left-of-centre Rosa nel Pugno (Rose in the Fist) party, he is pledged to fight all forms of prohibitionism.
- ‘There is now no legal distinction between heavy and light drugs . . . the government, in their opportunism and superficiality, are committing semantic and scientific crimes’ — thus Ignazio Marcozzi Rozzi, President of Rome’s Agency for the aid of drug addicts, and Rita Bernardini, Radicali Italiani Treasurer. ‘To get a tight grip on the problem’, they go on, ‘to defeat the drug mafias, the first essential is a programme of antiprohibitionism based on a sharp distinction between cannabis on one hand and cocaine, heroin and more on the other. Legalising cannabis and establishing well-organised, medically supervised therapeutic facilities to deal with the effects of the others are the first steps in damage reduction’.
- FUORILUOGO (‘Out of Place’), an association of concerned citizens, ha launched an appeal for antiprohibitionism aimed at the candidates in the upcoming 9th-10th April elections. Many Rosa nel Pugno candidates go along willingly, first among them LIA Secretary Marco Perduca and colleagues and collaborators Luca Coscioni and Marco Cappato.
